AUSSIE DIVERS WRAP UP 2022 FINA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN BUDAPEST

Published Tue 05 Jul 2022

The Australian Diving Team have wrapped up their 2022 FINA World Championships campaign, with two bronze medals and an array of top-10 placings.

Tokyo Olympian Shixin Li won bronze in the Men’s 1-Metre Springboard, marking the first medal for an Australian male in the FINA World Championships individual competition since Matthew Mitcham’s bronze in 2009 in the same event.

It is Li’s third medal in the event, having won gold for China at the 2011 and 2013 World Championships.

The result gives Li a great confidence boost ahead of his first Commonwealth Games appearance in Birmingham in just over 20 days time.

Fellow Birmingham team mates Anabelle Smith and Maddison Keeney are also bringing home some silverware, winning bronze in the Women’s 3-Metre Synchro on the final night of competition.

It’s the fourth bronze medal at a World Championships for Australia, having also taken third at the 2007, 2011 and 2015 World Championships.

Tokyo Olympian Cassiel Rousseau also put his competitors on notice, finishing fourth in the Men’s 10-Metre Platform just four points short of a bronze medal in a star studded final.

Joining Rousseau in the final of the Men's 10-Metre Platform was Sam Fricker who in his first FINA World Championships finished in 10th place with a score of 391.15.

Other individual Australian finalists included Emily Boyd and Nikita Hains in the Women’s 10-Metre Platform and Georgia Sheehan in the Women’s 1-Metre.

The team will now return to Australia for two weeks, before heading to Edinburgh (UK) for a training camp and then on to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
