Aussie divers Cassiel Rousseau and Domonic Bedggood have finished sixth in the Men’s Synchronised 10m Platform, taking on a highly-competitive field as they faced off against some of the world’s best.
But despite missing the podium, the pair were happy with their performance in Paris.
Favourites Lian Junjie and Yang Hao of China easily secured gold with a final score of 490.35, while Tom Daley and Noah Williams (Great Britain, 463.44) won silver and Rylan Wiens and Nathan Zsombor-Murray (Canada, 422.13) took bronze.
The first to dive into the pool, Cassiel and Domonic opened the compulsory component of the competition with two clean dives, scoring 51.00 and 48.60 respectively to sit in fourth before beginning the optional section.
Their third dive of a back pike 2½ somersault with 1½ twists secured the pair a score of 76.80 while their fourth dive, inward tuck 3½ somersaults, scored 72.96 to finish in sixth place after four rounds.
It was their fifth dive, their highest difficulty of dives at 3.7, that proved the most challenging, with a score of 64.38 seeing them in sixth place at the end of the penultimate round.
The pair rallied however, to finish off with a well-executed back pike 2½ somersault with 2½ twists, scoring their highest score of the day at 81.00, to finish with a final score of 394.74.
“I’m really happy with our performance,” Domonic said.
“This level of competition, we’re up against the top eight in the world, going up against the best of the best, so for us to put down five out of six great dives, we’re happy with that.
“Little mistakes, they happen in sport, but overall, I’m very happy with our performance.”
Cassiel echoed his partner’s sentiment, noting that he was ‘extremely happy’ to finish in sixth.
Cassiel, the reigning Individual 10m Platform World Champion, will now turn his attention to that event on 9 August with teammate Jaxon Bowshire from South Australia also set to compete.
“Today was a little taste of what the Olympics are like, and throughout the individual competition, I’m just looking to have fun and gain more experience,” Cassiel said.
China has won five of the seven Olympic gold medals in the history of the event, further securing their position as one of the diving powerhouses of the world.
The Aussies will be back in action when five-time Olympian Melissa Wu and debutant Ellie Cole compete in the women’s 10m Platform on Monday 5 August at 6pm AEST.
