Another great day of diving in Adelaide as Age Championships reach halfway mark

Published Fri 22 Apr 2022

The Australian Diving Age Championships reached their halfway point today, and with two successful days of competition already in the books there is still plenty of excitement to come over the weekend.

Friday was again characterised by the fun, camaraderie and impressive performances that we have come to expect from the Age Championships, as titles were assigned in nine categories and young divers took centre stage for the day.

The programme started with Mea Shires (NSW) helping NSW to a 1-2 finish in the Girls 12/13 Platform alongside teammate Hannah Moodie, before Austin Hughes (QLD) doubled yesterday’s success in the Boys 11 and Under 1m event taking the gold from the 3m as well.

It was another Queenslander who prevailed in the Boys 16/18 3m event, with Zachary Picton managing to beat home a legion of Victorians (including five athletes placed in the top-6) for gold.

Lacey Bowshire continued her winning ways for her home state after claiming the Women’s 19/24 3m event yesterday. Today she fought off competition from Victoria and Western Australia to win the 19+ Synchro title with fellow South Australian Zach Will.

Massive fields in the Girls 14/15 3m and Girls 16/18 1m events led to long and engaging competitions, with huge efforts by athletes and officials alike. Eventually it was Victorians Leyanna Brown and Evie English who came up on top, winning gold in their respective events.

A special shout-out goes to Jordan Roberts - the person behind the successful Facebook livestream on Diving Australia’s page (@DivingAus) that is giving diving fans from across Australia an opportunity to follow the competition in Adelaide. Jordan wasn’t able to attend today due to being a COVID-19 close contact, but he managed to run a remote live stream which again recorded some impressive viewing numbers (thanks to everybody who tuned in!)

Tomorrow’s program starts at 9.30am (South Australia local time) with the 12/13 Girls 3m event, the first of 10 events across 15 categories to be contested on Saturday.

All the action from the 2022 Australian Age Championships will again be live streamed via the official Diving Australia Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/DivingAus/, with all results also available at https://www.diverecorder.co.uk/live/index.php.
