2021 FINA World Cup Selection Trials - Preview

Published Tue 23 Mar 2021

Australia’s top divers are in action this weekend as the Diving Australia 2021 FINA World Cup Selection Trials are set to begin in Brisbane.

The four-day competition hosted at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre from Sunday the 28th of March, will see athletes vie for the opportunity to represent their country at next month’s FINA Diving World Cup in Tokyo.

Athletes selected to the team will look to qualify Australia’s final diving Olympic quota positions ahead of the Tokyo Summer Olympic Games.

Diving Australia General Manager, High Performance and Pathways Steve Foley says divers from across the country are well prepared for the event.

“Our Australian divers have been working incredibly hard over the past year, they are looking strong, confident, and well prepared,” Foley said. “I don’t think it is any exaggeration to say that the level of competition this weekend in Brisbane will be world class.

“It has been over a year since our athletes have had the opportunity to formally compete against one another on the national stage. I am sure they are all very excited to be back on the boards and show off all the hard work from the past 12 months.”

“The FINA Diving World Cup is consistently one of the most competitive diving events on our calendar, because of that we want to make sure we send a team prepared to go up against the world’s best.”

“The team selected from this event will have the opportunity not only to secure our remaining Olympic quota positions for Australia, but also compete in the Tokyo Aquatic Centre ahead of the Games in July.”

“I think our Australian divers are ready to show the world what we are made of, this competition will no doubt be the first step in doing that.”

The event hosted by Diving Queensland will bring together more than 40 competitors including Commonwealth, World Championship, and Olympic Medallists.

Diving Queensland State Administrator Toni Toohey says the event will provide inspiration of younger divers in the region.

“To have a high calibre event such as the 2021 FINA World Cup Selection Trials in Queensland is a huge boost for our diving community,” Toohey said, “For our up and coming athletes to have the opportunity to watch our nation’s top divers in action will no doubt provide a new wave of motivation and excitement.

“We at Diving Queensland look forward to welcoming our neighbours this weekend for what will be a fantastic four days of competition.

“This event will be yet another in the fantastic past of the Brisbane Aquatic Centre, which has seen many champions crowned, and Australian teams selected in its prestigious history.”
