2021 Australian Age Championships - Preview

Published Mon 12 Apr 2021

The 2021 Australian Age Championships kicks off in Brisbane tomorrow night ahead of what is set to be five days of fantastic diving.

With the cancelation of the 2020 Australian Age Championships, Age group divers from across the country will gather for the first time in more than 24 months.

Although athletes from Western Australia will be unable to attend the Championships in person, a brand new multi-modal approach will allow remote divers to take part in the event.

Diving Australia Manager, Competitions and Administration Jodie Gillam says the event will look different to past Age Championships but signals a strong return to national competition.

“There has been plenty of planning and preparation ahead of the 2021 Australian Age Championships in Brisbane,” Gillam said, “The team has been working around the clock to put this event together.

“We are so excited to put on this event for more than one hundred divers and their families who have been eagerly waiting for a national level event.

“Although the event will run a little differently, I have no doubt that it will be a fun and memorable experience for all involved.”

Diving Queensland State Administrator Toni Toohey says the event allows the national diving community to reconnect after a period apart.

“We are so excited to welcome our friends from other states to Brisbane this week,” Toohey said, “They have all been training and working for the opportunity to compete for a position on the podium, and now that opportunity is finally here.

“I think it is going to be a great week of competition, and for Diving Queensland to host is just the cherry on top.”

All the action begins tomorrow night when states will battle it out for the State Team Challenge crown, where Victoria will look to defend their title from 2019.
