TARVIT HOLDS OUT BROBEN ON RETURN FROM INJURY TO WIN GOLD
World junior gold medalist Lara Tarvit has come from behind to win gold over Olympic silver medalist Brittany Broben in the final of the women's platform event at the Diving Grand Prix on the Gold Coast.
Despite finishing second, it was a triumphant return to the pool for 19-year-old Broben after missing most of last year, including the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, because of a shoulder injury.
After qualifying fifth for Saturday's final, the Gold Coast-based diver led after the first two dives of the final, regained the lead after her fourth dive, before Tarvit took top position with a solid final effort.
17-year-old Tarvit showed her enormous potential when she beat a quality field to win gold at last year's FINA World Junior Championships in Russia.
The Queenslander had earlier finished fourth in the platform at last year's Commonwealth Games.
Broben's main aim was to complete the competition without incident, acknowledging in the event lead-up she was still well below her best.
South Australia's Taneka Kovchenko finished third.
Earlier Western Australia's Joshua Ong triumphed in the men's 3-metre final, but only just.
Ong finished the competition with 345.00, finishing 0.15 points ahead of South Australia's Brodie Scapens, with Victoria's Joshue Kehagias third.
The Gold Coast Grand Prix, which is being held at the Southport venue for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, continues tomorrow.
