GOLD MEDALISTS HEAD STRONG DIVING FIELD

Commonwealth Games gold medalists Esther Qin and Domonic Bedggood head a strong field of divers competing at this week’s Australian Open Championships in Adelaide.

Qin, who dived superbly to win the 3-metre gold medal in Glasgow and also the bronze in the 1-metre, is set to compete in the 3-metre, the 1-metre and the 3-metre synchro this weekend.

20-year-old Bedggood, who won gold alongside Matthew Mitcham in the platform synchro, will compete in the individual platform.

Perth teenager, Maddison Keeney, considered by many to be the unlucky diver of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, will compete in three events.

Keeney won silver in the 1-metre in Glasgow, despite being penalised for a baulk on one of her dives.

She also teamed with Olympian Anabelle Smith to win bronze in the 3-metre synchro.

Keeney and Smith will team up again this weekend, while Keeney will also contest the individual 1-metre and 3-metre events.

Also lining up this weekend will be hot prospect Georgia Sheehan, the 15-year-old schoolgirlwho narrowly missed a medal in the 3-metre final in Glasgow.

Another multi-medalist from Glasgow, Grant Nel, has entered the 3-metre synchro with fellow Victorian, James Connor.

The Australian Open Diving Championships start on Thursday at the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre, and run through until Sunday.

The highlight on opening day will be the contest between Qin, Sheehan and Keeney in the women’s 1-metre.
