19th Fina World Cup – Midway Update

Published Fri 18 Jul 2014

Midway through the 19th FINA World Cup, the Australian Diving Team is exceeding expectations with simply amazing performances!

The highlight has been the Bronze Medal in the Women’s 3m synchro to Anabelle Smith and Maddison Keeney.

After qualifying in 5th position, they started strongly and after performing their third dive flawlessly, found themselves in second position with just two dives to go. A slight mistake on their fourth dive had them slip to third with one dive remaining but under huge pressure they nailed their final dive to hold on to the bronze medal with 310.14 points. China finished in first place with 340.50 points and Canada claimed the Silver with 318.33.

Not far behind that in terms of highlights was an amazing performance from Melissa Wu and Rachel Bugg to finish fourth in the Women’s 10m synchro. In a highly entertaining and incredibly high standard competition, Wu and Bugg finished on a score that would have claimed silver at last year’s FINA World Championships and at least Silver at every FINA World Series event this year. Like their 3m counterparts, they made the slightest of mistakes on their fourth dive but finished incredibly strongly with arguably the finest 5253B of the day to cement fourth with a new personal best score of 331.44. China again claimed the Gold with 357.66 points with Malaysia (336.66) and Canada (335.25) also reaching the podium.

The FINA World Cup moves into individual events now and today sees Melissa Wu and Lara Tarvit compete in the Women’s 10m and Grant Nel the Men’s 3m. The Women’s 10m final is at 7.40pm (9.40pm AEST) tonight and can be watched on FINA live streaming – fina.tv
