About Georgia

Georgia Sheehan was inspired to take up diving after watching Matthew Mitcham and Melissa Wu win medals at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Sheehan joined Diving Australia’s National Talent Identification program at the age of 10 and with a background in gymnastics she took to the sport with ease.

Sheehan has been representing Australia in diving for over a decade as both an individual and synchronised springboard diver. In 2014, a 15-year-old Sheehan was the youngest member of the Commonwealth Games Team for Glasgow, and she placed fourth in the Women’s 1-Metre Springboard.

Four years’ later and competing at a home Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Sheehan won a gold medal with diving partner Esther Qin in the Women’s 3-Metre Synchronised. Sheehan also won silver in the Women’s 1-Metre Springboard.

At her third Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Sheehan finished fifth in 1-Metre Springboard, despite registering a higher score than her silver-medal performance on the Gold Coast four years earlier. She was also seventh in the 3-Metre springboard.

  • How did you get your start in diving? I started diving when I was 10 years old after watching Melissa Wu and Matthew Mitchem win medals at the Beijing 2008 Olympics. These two inspired me to start diving and it was really cool to compete at the 2014 Commonwealth Games on the same team as them - a dream come true!
  • Who has had the greatest influence on your sporting career? There’s three people that come to mind. Firstly my Mum, for always being my number one supporter no matter what. My coach, Mat Helm, for always believing in my abilities. Lastly, my partner Dom (Domonic Bedggood), who’s pushed me to never give up.
  • Who is your diving inspiration? Mathew Helm
  • Favourite place to dive? Budapest or Edinburgh
  • Something you might not know about me: I’m one of eight kids (five immediate siblings and two step-siblings)
  • What do you love about diving? Challenging myself to always be the best version of myself and to push past my limits
